What is ARTAS?

What is ARTAS robotic hair restoration?

ARTAS is the world’s first robotic system for hair transplants, and Dr. Holt uses it for ARTAS hair transplants at our Grand Rapids clinic. It is a form of follicular unit extraction (FUE): healthy hair follicles are taken one at a time from the back and sides of your scalp, where hair is naturally resistant to balding, and moved to the areas that are thinning.

What makes ARTAS different is how the follicles are harvested. A high-resolution camera maps your scalp, and the robotic arm selects and extracts each follicular unit with a level of precision that is hard to match by hand. That means less trauma to the donor area, tiny dot-like marks instead of a long scar, and grafts that are ready to be placed exactly where Dr. Holt designs your new hairline.

The ARTAS system is FDA-cleared, and the procedure is done in a single day under local anesthesia. Read more about the advantages of the ARTAS system.

Dr. Holt explains the ARTAS robotic system

How an ARTAS hair transplant works

From your first visit to your final result, here is what to expect at Holt Hair Restoration Center.

01

Consultation and hairline design

Dr. Holt examines your scalp and donor hair, explains whether ARTAS is the right fit, and designs a hairline that suits your face and age.

02

Robotic mapping and harvest

On procedure day your donor area is numbed. The ARTAS camera maps the scalp and the robotic arm extracts individual follicular units with precision.

03

Graft placement by Dr. Holt

Dr. Holt places each graft at the angle and direction of natural hair growth, so the result blends in with the hair you already have.

04

Recovery and new growth

Most patients are back to normal activities within a few days. New hair starts growing around three months, with the full result at about a year.

Are you a good candidate for ARTAS?

ARTAS works best for patients with enough healthy donor hair at the back and sides of the scalp who want to restore a receding hairline, thinning crown or bald areas. It is also used to repair older transplants. If you are not a fit, Dr. Holt will tell you honestly and explain other options such as PRP or skin micropigmentation.

  • Healthy donor hair at the back and sides
  • Pattern hair loss or a receding hairline
  • Realistic expectations for your result
  • Good general health

ARTAS hair transplant FAQ

Have a question about ARTAS hair restoration in Grand Rapids that isn’t answered here? Call or text the office.

Does an ARTAS hair transplant hurt?

The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you are awake but comfortable. Most patients feel only brief discomfort while the numbing is placed, and many are surprised by how easy the day is. Some tenderness in the donor area for a few days afterward is normal.

How long does the ARTAS procedure take?

It depends on how many grafts you need. Most procedures take most of a day, and you go home the same day. You can watch TV or bring a movie, and we take breaks for stretching and lunch.

What is recovery like after ARTAS?

Expect some redness, small scabs and mild swelling for the first several days. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days and to work within about a week or two. See our guides to the ARTAS healing process and how to sleep after an ARTAS hair transplant.

When will I see results?

Transplanted hair grows in phases. The grafted hairs usually shed in the first weeks, which is normal. New growth starts around three months, you will see a noticeable improvement at about six months, and the final result at about a year.

Will ARTAS leave a scar?

There is no linear scar and no stitches. Each follicle is removed with a tiny punch, which leaves small dot-like marks in the donor area. Once healed they are very hard to see, even with short hair.

Are the results permanent?

The follicles are taken from areas that are naturally resistant to hair loss, so transplanted hair is expected to keep growing for life. Your existing, non-transplanted hair can still thin over time, which is why Dr. Holt may also recommend treatment to protect it.

How much does an ARTAS hair transplant cost?

The cost depends on the number of grafts you need. Dr. Holt gives you a clear quote at your complimentary consultation, with no pressure to do more than you need.
