What is SMP?

What is skin micropigmentation?

Skin micropigmentation (SMP), also called scalp micropigmentation, is an advanced cosmetic pigmentation method. Similar to traditional tattooing, it uses highly specialized equipment to place tiny deposits of pigment in the scalp that look like natural hair follicles.

At our Grand Rapids clinic, SMP is used as an effective alternative to a hair transplant, or alongside one. It can add the look of density to thinning hair, recreate the look of a closely shaved head, and provide a natural-looking cover for scars, including the linear scar from a FUT strip hair transplant.

Every treatment is customized to match your hair type and skin color for a flawless, natural look. Your treatment is performed by Trisha Clark Robertson, our SMP specialist.

How scalp micropigmentation works

SMP is done in our Grand Rapids office, with no surgery and no downtime.

01

Consultation and design

We look at your hair loss, skin tone and goals, and plan the hairline or density you want.

02

Color matching

The pigment is matched to your hair and skin so the result blends in naturally.

03

Pigment sessions

A topical numbing agent is applied, then pigment is placed in the scalp. Each session takes two to four hours, depending on the area.

04

Long-lasting results

Results last four to six years. When slight fading appears, a quick touch-up restores the look.

Skin micropigmentation FAQ

Have a question about scalp micropigmentation in Grand Rapids that isn’t answered here? Call or text the office.

Is skin micropigmentation painful?

A topical numbing agent is applied to your scalp before the procedure so you don't feel pain. Some discomfort is still possible, and your own pain tolerance plays a role in how much you feel.

How long does skin micropigmentation take?

Scalp micropigmentation is a relatively simple procedure that takes between two and four hours, depending on the size of the area you want to cover.

Can scalp micropigmentation be detected?

Scalp micropigmentation is designed to be undetectable, because it replicates each client's natural hair follicles so precisely.

Will it fade?

SMP lasts between four and six years. It will not wash off, but after this time you may notice some slight fading, which can be fixed with a quick touch-up.

Does skin micropigmentation work for long hair?

Yes. Scalp micropigmentation also works for long hair, where it adds the look of density to thinning areas.

Can SMP hide a hair transplant scar?

Yes. SMP can provide a natural-looking cover for scars, including the linear scar left by a FUT strip hair transplant.

How much does skin micropigmentation cost?

The cost depends on the size of the area being treated. We give you a clear quote at your complimentary consultation.
